Nicotine has always had negative connotations, and rightly so. It usually is in cigarettes, which is why it has that negative reputation with addiction and even worse, cancer. However, we are seeing a slight change in its reputation through influencers and even health experts.
One of those is Robert F. Kennedy, the brother of John F. Kennedy, who is one of the advocates that nicotine has its benefits, especially when it comes to nicotine pouches. That being said, his wording can be misinterpreted because he’s said “Probably the safest way to consume nicotine” and spotted using a nicotine pouch in his mouth.
The issue with this is that even influencers are saying that nicotine pouches have their benefits. On both TikTok and Instagram, influencers are sending the message out that nicotine has its benefits, such as cognitive benefits and also helps to improve relaxation. They also say that the main issue with cigarettes is actually the tobacco, and in all fairness, they are not entirely wrong.
Nicotine Comes In Many Forms, Some Bad and Some Much Worse
There is no doubt that nicotine can actually be useful to some people, especially those who are quitting smoking. Quitting smoking cigarettes can be extremely difficult for some people, which is why lowering the strength of nicotine in some products may be more effective. Due to this, we can consume nicotine in many forms such as e-cigarettes/vapes, nicotine patches, nicotine gum and nicopods. All of which have a slightly different target market.
Now, not all forms of nicotine are good, but some are slightly better than others. That is why over the last couple of decades, we have been heavily promoting nicotine patches and gum to help people quit.
The nicotine patches that we use to quit smoking are different to those found in a vape and nicotine pouches. The newer form of nicotine is often a synthetic form of nicotine, which can actually have different pharmacologic characteristics in the brain.
The main reason why both gum and nicotine patches are created is that they are designed to be used for a short period such as a few months or a year. On top of this, the synthetic forms of nicotine are manufactured to be delivered to the brain very quickly, which is what causes the addiction.
The nicotine gum that is used for people to quit smoking or even vaping has a very small amount of nicotine, between 2 and 4 milligrams of nicotine. However, brands of nicotine pouches can vary. Some are high in strength, and some are very low. If you are using nicotine pouches to quit smoking, it would be better to target smaller milligrams, such as 3 to 6-milligram pouches.

Some Professionals Claim It Isn’t Linked To Nicotine
Nicotine is certainly a grey area, with some people claiming that it is linked with causing cancer and others who say it doesn’t. However, there have been many studies that have identified that nicotine at high levels can deform cellular mechanisms, which can then lead to cancer. The newer products that we see today in the shops give us very high levels of nicotine that enter the bloodstream.
As nicotine pouches are the new hip and happening thing to do for nicotine, some users are placing two pouches in their mouths, which, over a long period of time, can be quite damaging.
On the other hand, it has also been identified that nicotine on its own doesn’t necessarily cause cancer alone. But that isn’t the full story because cancer takes a while to develop. This means that the modern types of nicotine products have not been around for long enough to determine whether they cause cancer. Although there have been very early studies identifying that it can cause the same DNA changes to the cells in their mouths and throats, which are seen with those who smoke cigarettes.
The Mixed Conception of Nicotine Helping With Relaxation and Brain Function
One of the things that some influencers and health “experts” are trying to push is that nicotine can help with brain function. Yes, there have been some studies that have identified that nicotine can offer cognitive benefits, including focus and attention span, but these are very simple tasks within these studies. However, when people are claiming that it helps with stress relief and relaxation, that is a different story.
Summary
Nicotine pouches and nicopods can be a good way to reduce the strength of nicotine and help you quit smoking. However, there are some people who choose to have high strengths for these pouches, which don’t do them any favours in terms of quitting. If you have never started smoking, vaping or using nicotine pouches, it is advised that you avoid starting because of the supposed “benefits” of consuming nicotine as it can negatively affect your health.
